About
Nutrition is like most things in life, it is different for everyone. Everyone has their own tastes, the way they prefer to eat and how they react to different foods. There is no one diet that works for everyone, or one “best” diet.
Collaborating with clients to improve their health is my goal. This could be nutrition therapy specific to a medical condition or planning ways to create a more healthful lifestyle using easy to implement steps.
Goals may include:
-
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) which is a way of using nutrition as a therapy for certain diagnosis: lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol numbers or dealing with digestive issues.
-
Performance goals such as: boosting performance, reducing recovery time, improving sleep and changing body composition.
-
General goals such as: improving energy, getting more quality sleep, reducing inflammation or balancing nutrient intakes. These are common symptoms in autoimmune conditions and with hormonal issues and can be greatly helped through diet and lifestyle changes.
Weight Loss: Weight loss is a common reason to seek out a dietitian. When clients have this as a goal I find it much more useful to look at weight as a symptom of something else. Finding out what the underlying cause of weight gain is much more useful than just focusing on weight as the issue. To be in harmony our bodies need balance. Stress, lack of time, poor diet, poor sleep, lack of movement are all things that put our bodies out of whack. Part of the reasons diets generally don’t work long term is that they just focus on removing things, which is a very short-term way of addressing the issue. Once you become less restrictive they no longer work and the weight comes back. When there is balance, weight tends to regulate as well.
With clients my goal is to help them reach their goals. I want to stress that improving health is always where I come from and I believe weight and health are separate.

Meet Kate Pond, MS, RDN, CN
My road to a career in nutrition was a winding one. Food is something we all deal with everyday and may not think much about. As a young person I certainly didn't think about food much more than what I liked or didn't like, if I was hungry or if I was full. Over time all the complexity of food has become a large part of my life. Food is such a centerpiece of our modern lives, with constant messaging about what we should look like, what we should eat, what will make us healthy; along with the fact that food is the way we bond and celebrate. This leads to such a confusing food landscape where we have access to pretty much any food at any time but also feel like we shouldn't eat most of it. There is so much judgement around food and eating and size that it can feel too big to face. Diet culture has really cemented that we should judge every food choice we make and that feels so wrong to me. The other side of the coin is that our diets have gotten more and more unhealthy, so how do we arrive at a place of peace with food and also a healthy way of eating? That's where I started my nutrition education.

I was always one to read the diet clickbait “How to Incorporate This Superfood Into Your Diet” or “Diet Mistakes Dietitians Never Make” or “What a Nutritionist Would Never Buy at Trader Joes”. But, these articles never really gave me what I was looking for. So, after graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in psychology I eventually decided to go full speed into nutrition earning my Masters in Science degree from Bastyr University, completing an intensive 1200 hour internship and working in all areas of nutrition. I wanted to find out the “truth” about food and nutrition, what I found was that it is both much simpler and much more complicated than I ever thought. Nutrition is such a personal issue for each of us and can make such a big difference in how we feel. I would love to help you cut through all the nutrition clickbait as well and find out what works for you!
